The recording of this concert being online, it was heard by people from Castellazzo Bormida, the town in Northern Italy wherre he was born. This resulted in Dr. Dailey being invited to speak about the composer, via Zoom and in Italian, to a meeting in the town to celebrate the release of a booklet about Panizza and his decendants (his son, Achille, was the conductor at the premiere of Puccini's first opera). Dr. Dailey subsequently spoke about Panizza at a meeting in Dublin of the Society for Musicology in Ireland. One of the questions that arose at that meeting was where one could hear music by Panizza, whose music has been overlooked--with the exception of his Ballabile con Variazioni for E flat clarinet, none of his music has appeared in modern editions.

Collectio Musicorum has since started The Panizza Project, which will present recordings of selected pieces by this composer, as well as other materials. The first recording--of ballet transcriptions--has already been done and is being edited. Recordings of his vocal music will take place in 2024.
Collectio Musicorumhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04281540211435288501noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6075208082216346079.post-28124107472671232952023-10-27T22:10:00.000-07:002023-10-27T22:10:01.206-07:00Collectio Musicorum in the New York Times

Collectio Musicorum is featured in this article in the New York Times on Shakespeare's First Folio.

https://www.nytimes.com/2023/10/26/arts/music/shakespeare-music-first-folio.html?unlocked_article_code=1.50w.2yc6.IOsh73odxsH3&smid=url-share

CRITIC’S NOTEBOOK

<h1 class="css-1ay0v87 e1h9rw200" data-testid="headline" id="link-436d75a4" style="border: 0px; color: var(--color-content-primary,#121212); font-family: nyt-cheltenham, georgia, "times new roman", times, serif; font-feature-settings: inherit; font-kerning: inherit; font-optical-sizing: inherit; font-size: 2.9375rem; font-stretch: inherit; font-variant: inherit; font-variation-settings: inherit; font-weight: 200; line-height: 3.4375rem; margin: 0px auto 0.5rem; max-width: none; padding: 0px; position: relative; text-size-adjust: 100%; vertical-align: baseline; width: 600px;">‘Make Noise Enough’: Excavating Shakespeare’s Songs

<p class="css-1n0orw4 e1wiw3jv0" id="article-summary" style="border: 0px; color: var(--color-content-secondary,#363636); font-family: nyt-cheltenham, georgia, "times new roman", times, serif; font-feature-settings: inherit; font-kerning: inherit; font-optical-sizing: inherit; font-size: 1.4375rem; font-stretch: normal; font-variant: inherit; font-variation-settings: inherit; line-height: 1.875rem; margin: 0px auto 1.875rem; max-width: 600px; padding: 0px; text-size-adjust: 100%; vertical-align: baseline; width: 600px;">In Shakespeare, music is an integral part of the action. The tune was jaunty, full of the cantering rhythms and mimetic horn calls that fit a song about hunting. But sung in canon, some of the notes bumped roughly against one another in daring dissonance. The singers broke off, looking at their conductor for guidance.
<p class="css-at9mc1 evys1bk0" style="border: 0px; color: var(--color-content-secondary,#363636); font-family: nyt-imperial, georgia, "times new roman", times, serif; font-feature-settings: inherit; font-kerning: inherit; font-optical-sizing: inherit; font-size: 1.25rem; font-stretch: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-variant: inherit; font-variation-settings: inherit; font-weight: inherit; line-height: 1.875rem; margin: 0px 0px 0.9375rem; max-width: 100%; overflow-wrap: break-word; padding: 0px; text-size-adjust: 100%; vertical-align: baseline; width: 600px;">Jeff Dailey, the group’s director, glanced up encouragingly from his music stand. Remember, you’re drunk at this point.”
<p class="css-at9mc1 evys1bk0" style="border: 0px; color: var(--color-content-secondary,#363636); font-family: nyt-imperial, georgia, "times new roman", times, serif; font-feature-settings: inherit; font-kerning: inherit; font-optical-sizing: inherit; font-size: 1.25rem; font-stretch: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-variant: inherit; font-variation-settings: inherit; font-weight: inherit; line-height: 1.875rem; margin: 0px 0px 0.9375rem; max-width: 100%; overflow-wrap: break-word; padding: 0px; text-size-adjust: 100%; vertical-align: baseline; width: 600px;">The performers were preparing a program of songs, ballads and rounds from Shakespeare plays that brings to life the tunes scholars think might have been part of the earliest productions. His plays are punctuated by drum rolls, fanfares and dances, indicated in stage directions. And they are teeming with verses meant to be sung. In the First Folio these verses are clearly marked as “song” in the stage instructions and set apart typographically with italics. Singing is essential for rendering Ophelia’s madness, Ariel’s magic and the inebriated antics ratcheting up the comic confusion in “Twelfth Night.”
<div style="border: 0px; font: inherit; margin: 0px; And though settings of Shakespeare lyrics appear in many 17th-century English song collections and lute books, these often date to later decades, making it difficult to determine their origin. A few popular songs can be traced back to Shakespeare’s time, but even then, Dailey said, “it’s a chicken and egg question: Did Shakespeare include them because they were famous, or did they become famous because they had been in his plays?”

<aside aria-label="companion column" class="css-ew4tgv" style="-webkit-box-align: center; Duffin published “Shakespeare’s Songbook,” which sets hundreds of lyrics to tunes he identified as likely matches. Among them is the hunting round “What shall we have” that was first published, with textual variants, in a collection from 1652. In a manuscript in the Folger Library, Duffin found a version appearing to date back as far as 1625, with a text that more closely aligns with the First Folio. That’s nearly contemporaneous with the play’s publication, but it’s still a quarter century off from 1599, when scholars think Shakespeare first wrote “As You Like It.” In the play, moreover, a single forester is bidden to sing it, whereas this is a round for four voices. Which characters would have joined in onstage?

<p class="css-at9mc1 evys1bk0" style="border: 0px; color: var(--color-content-secondary,#363636); font-family: nyt-imperial, georgia, "times new roman", times, serif; font-feature-settings: inherit; font-kerning: inherit; font-optical-sizing: inherit; font-size: 1.25rem; font-stretch: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-variant: inherit; font-variation-settings: inherit; font-weight: inherit; line-height: 1.875rem; margin: 0px 0px 0.9375rem; max-width: 100%; overflow-wrap: break-word; padding: 0px; text-size-adjust: 100%; vertical-align: baseline; width: 600px;">Another song from the play, “It was a Lover and his Lass,” survives in a setting by Morley printed in 1600, which some see as evidence that it was the original song, perhaps even commissioned by Shakespeare. Yet even such a seemingly clear attribution raises questions in performance. Morley’s setting is for a solo voice, whereas in the play it is sung by two pages.
<p class="css-at9mc1 evys1bk0" style="border: 0px; color: var(--color-content-secondary,#363636); font-family: nyt-imperial, georgia, "times new roman", times, serif; font-feature-settings: inherit; font-kerning: inherit; font-optical-sizing: inherit; font-size: 1.25rem; font-stretch: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-variant: inherit; font-variation-settings: inherit; font-weight: inherit; line-height: 1.875rem; margin: 0px 0px 0.9375rem; max-width: 100%; overflow-wrap: break-word; padding: 0px; text-size-adjust: 100%; vertical-align: baseline; width: 600px;">“How do you then perform it?” Dailey asked. “Do you have two singers sing it in unison? Do you have two actors alternate verses? Or do you compose an additional part for the second singer?”
<p class="css-at9mc1 evys1bk0" style="border: 0px; color: var(--color-content-secondary,#363636); font-family: nyt-imperial, georgia, "times new roman", times, serif; font-feature-settings: inherit; font-kerning: inherit; font-optical-sizing: inherit; font-size: 1.25rem; font-stretch: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-variant: inherit; font-variation-settings: inherit; font-weight: inherit; line-height: 1.875rem; margin: 0px; max-width: 100%; overflow-wrap: break-word; padding: 0px; text-size-adjust: 100%; vertical-align: baseline; width: 600px;">In concert, Dailey will have his performers take turns with the verses and then sing the refrain in unison. But Duffin, in a recent article, makes a case for reconstructing the song as a duet. He argues that the lute accompaniment in Morley’s printed version is so unusually awkward that it was probably adapted from a previous version for two voices.

Editors’ Picks

<h3 class="css-1p08cbr" style="border-bottom: none; border-image: initial; border-left: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: nyt-cheltenham-small, georgia, "times new roman"; font-feature-settings: inherit; font-kerning: inherit; font-optical-sizing: inherit; font-size: 14px; font-stretch: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-variant: inherit; font-variation-settings: inherit; font-weight: 500; line-height: 17px; margin: auto 0px auto 10px; padding: 0px; text-size-adjust: 100%; vertical-align: baseline; width: calc(100% - 85px);">A Mirror Reveals a Surprise About Bird Brains

<h3 class="css-1p08cbr" style="border-bottom: none; border-image: initial; border-left: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: nyt-cheltenham-small, georgia, "times new roman"; font-feature-settings: inherit; font-kerning: inherit; font-optical-sizing: inherit; font-size: 14px; font-stretch: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-variant: inherit; font-variation-settings: inherit; font-weight: 500; line-height: 17px; margin: auto 0px auto 10px; padding: 0px; text-size-adjust: 100%; vertical-align: baseline; width: calc(100% - 85px);">Yankee Fans Can Buy Mickey Mantle’s Childhood Home. But Duffin sees no reason to believe that Shakespeare ever commissioned specific music. The clues linking him to Johnson, a master lutenist and the author of artful settings in the plays, are also inconclusive. “The evidence that he was the composer of the King’s Men is so circular,” Duffin said in an interview, referring to Shakespeare’s company of actors. “Everybody wants him to be. The songs are beautiful, but were they the original songs? Probably not.”
<p class="css-at9mc1 evys1bk0" style="border: 0px; color: var(--color-content-secondary,#363636); font-family: nyt-imperial, georgia, "times new roman", times, serif; font-feature-settings: inherit; font-kerning: inherit; font-optical-sizing: inherit; font-size: 1.25rem; font-stretch: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-variant: inherit; font-variation-settings: inherit; font-weight: inherit; line-height: 1.875rem; margin: 0px; max-width: 100%; overflow-wrap: break-word; padding: 0px; text-size-adjust: 100%; vertical-align: baseline; width: 600px;">Much of Duffin’s research has focused on the humble tunes that were the currency of popular culture in Shakespeare’s time. He said ballads in particular were so ubiquitous that an actor presented with a particular meter and rhyme schema would have known which tune to supply. Looking into the names of actors listed in the First Folio, he said he found evidence that many were “tumblers, jugglers and song-and-dance men,” adding that they would have brought their musical skills into the theater.

Image

<picture class="css-1j5kxti" style="display: block; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 300ms ease-in-out 0s; width: 1200px;"><img alt="Musicians and singers, seated in a classroom-type rehearsal space, are rehearsing. Over the past three years, during Covid restrictions, many of the musicians who have performed with us have moved away from New York City. We are also looking to expand our offerings and the size of our ensembles for some very exciting upcoming projects. We are looking for singers and instrumentalists familiar with medieval, Renaissance, and baroque performance practice. We offer compensation of $100 to $500 per concert and perform throughout the east coast.

Please send an e mail with supporting materials to jdailey@gts.edu. Also free free to contact us at that e mail if you have any questions.
Collectio Musicorumhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04281540211435288501noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6075208082216346079.post-9697423588066770612022-04-03T20:48:00.006-07:002022-04-03T21:02:15.940-07:00Collectio Musicorumhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04281540211435288501noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6075208082216346079.post-49727067231623969332019-09-15T11:50:00.001-07:002019-09-15T11:53:20.361-07:00Collectio Musicorum featured in the New York TimesIn the New York Times on September 12, 2019.
Although it survives in four medieval manuscripts and was published (in Middle English) in the 19th century, it was never performed in the United States. A review of the production may be found here: https://www.rgmagazine.com/the-harrowing-of-hell-a-theatre-review-by-michael-elias/.

The production has been nominated for an Innovative Theatre Award, and further details about that may be found here: https://nyitawards.blogspot.com/2019/08/the-harrowing-of-hell.html. The award ceremony is September 16th. Keep your fingers crossed!
It will be performed in the weeks prior to Halloween 2018. Although the text is not medieval, it is based on the medieval concept of the dead returning to earth to recruit new members of their band. Written shortly after the Battle of Waterloo in 1815, Scott wrote it after a visit to the battlefield.
The session was devoted to troubadour music, and featured Dr. Jeff Dailey and Christopher Thompson (who also sang and played the harp) giving papers and two additional members--Elizabeth Bates and Patrick Fennig--performing selections from the 12th and 13th centuries. Dr. Dailey spoke about the surviving alba repertoire--music describing adulterous relationship and Mr. Thompson talked and demonstrated how to devise harp accompaniments for monophonic songs.Collectio Musicorumhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04281540211435288501noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6075208082216346079.post-15275721813876937352017-08-15T07:50:00.000-07:002017-08-23T13:48:15.475-07:00Primarily Pipelare

Mattheus Pipleare (c. 1450-1515) was a composer active in
the Low Countries during the great flowering of Franco-Netherlandish
music. He lived and worked in Louvain,
Antwerp and ‘s-Hertogenbosch, and, unlike many of his contemporaries, seems
never to have left to study in either France or Italy. A master of polyphony, his surviving music
consists mainly of sacred works, and the Festival Chorus of Collectio Musicorum
will present several of these works, including his magisterial Missa de Feria
and Magnificat at a free concert on
Friday, October 20th at Christ and St. Stephen’s Church, 122 West 69th St, New
York, NY 10023 at 8 PM. Also on the
program are keyboard intabulations of works by Pipelare, performed by the
organist James Wetzel.

to light and life. Dr. Cross was also a
composer, and several of his organ works will be heard at the concert, along
with music by his colleague, Dr. Arnold Rosner (1945-2013), a composer inspired
by Renaissance polyphony. Other works by

2017 marks the 500th anniversary of the start of the Reformation. Collectio Musicorum brings to life music from
that time in a concert on Friday, September 15th at Christ and St. Stephen’s
Church, 122 West 69th St, New York, NY 10023 at 8 PM. Admission is free.

The concert brings together the music of the master
composers of the time, from all different traditions. You will hear music by well-known names such
as Josquin des Prez, Ludwig Senfl, and John Taverner, alongside the much lesser
known Claude Goudimel, Eustachio Romano, and Conrad Rein. Also on the program is music by the Reformers
themselves—Martin Luther and Ulrich Zwingli were composers as well as
theologians, and understood the role of music in the lives of their
congregations. Much of the music comes
from the 16th century, but also included will be one of the most heart-rending
of compositions—William Child’s “Lord, the Heathen are Come into Your Temple”—written
just prior to the English civil war.

Entitled "The Dance of Heresy--Music for the Female Pope," it shows the relationship between "La Manfredina," a dance in British Museum MS Add. 29987 and Manfreda da Pirovano, who was appointed popess by a religious group called the "Gugliemites," followers of St. Guglielma, whom they believed was the bodily incarnation of the Holy Spirit. Collectio Musicorum performed "La Manfredina" in its concert at the Boston Early Music Festival, and will be performing it again in the future.Collectio Musicorumhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04281540211435288501noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6075208082216346079.post-65136666845606018262015-10-29T05:32:00.003-07:002015-10-29T05:32:59.957-07:00New York State Council on the ArtsOn October 27th, Dr. Dailey represented Collectio Musicorum at a meeting of early music ensembles sponsored by the New York State Council on the Arts.

Polyphony, the combining of multiple musical lines, can be traced back to the early Middle Ages and has been called the major contribution of Western culture to music. This concert, which also featured musicians Patrick Fennig, Tim Keeler and Richard Lippold, included pieces that are often mentioned in textbooks but rarely performed, such as selections by Leoninus and Chipre, the latter accompanied by a trio of gemshorns; instrumental dances from 13th century England; three “Robin” motets from the Bamberg Codex; and a complete performance of the Tournai Mass, the first complete surviving setting of the mass ordinary.
